With minimal systemic absorption, it stays concentrated in the gut lumen where ammonia-producing bacteria reside, limiting systemic side effects and drug interactions while offering broad antibacterial activity against the gram-positive, gram-negative, aerobic, and anaerobic organisms implicated in ammonia production.
